What is In-Home Care?
In-home care is where a non-medical carer comes into your home, on a regular basis or full time, to help you with everyday tasks. Carers can come in for an hour a week, several hours a day or live with you.
What are the benefits of In-Home Care?
In-home Care has many benefits compared to residential care homes. These include:
Staying in Your own Surroundings
One of the key benefits is that you get to stay in your own familiar surroundings. This can be especially comforting for those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Independence
As you are in your own home you can choose the level of support you need and also choose your own schedule. You can do things when you want, to have visitors when you wish, and go out when you wish.
One on one care
You receive personalised one on one care during your visit and have it tailored to your needs and wants. The carer can focus their full attention on you and your needs.
Cost
Depending on the care needed and the amount of time the carer is there, the cost will more often than not be cheaper than a residential care home.
The Different Types of In-Home Care
There are many different types of In-home Care available. Below is a brief descriptions of each.
Visiting Care (also known as domiciliary care)
Visiting Care is where a Carer or Carers visit you on a regular basis to help with daily tasks. These visits would usually be for a minimum of one hour, although a few companies offer shorter visits.
Some of the tasks that Visiting Care can help with include:

- A concierge service. Anything from flowers for birthdays to organising a trip to the theatre.
- Companionship when you’d like it
- Care for a pet
Live-In Care
Live-In Care is where a Carer or team of Carers lives with you to provide 24 hour support 7 days a week.
- Live-In Care includes:
- Personal care such as washing, dressing and toileting
- Administering medicine & picking up prescriptions
- Cooking meals and cleaning
- Shopping and running errands
- Organising appointments and helping with life admin.
- Facilitating social activities

Short- term Care
Short-term care is where a Carer or Carers support someone for a specified time period for example, 2 weeks or 1 month. This can take the form of visiting care or live-in care depending on the circumstances. Some examples, of short term care include:
Post Op Care – is where a person needs extra help while they are recovering from an operation.
Respite Care – this is where the current Carer (usually a family member or friend) needs a break from the caring responsibilities.
End of Life Care (also known as Palliative Care) – is the support and care of someone who has a terminal illness. It involves the management of symptoms and pain and keeping the person as comfortable as possible.
Specialist Care
Specialist Care is support and care that is specific to a particular condition. This can include dementia, Parkinson’s, stroke or cerebral palsy to name a few. Usually, the Carers who provide this type of care have specialist training and experience in these conditions and so are able to provide the specific support that is needed.
